5. What steps did the Native American movement take to protest? What was the government response?

Steps:
-American Indian Movement (AIM): set out the goals of a new activist organization to help Native Americans [set up protrol programs in cities & encouraged racial & cultural pride in young people
-AIM fought for legal rights including autonomy or self-gorvernment
-sought to control the natural resources on Native American lands

Government Response:
-tried to bring jobs & income to some reservations by engaging industries to locate there & by leasing reservation lands to energy & development corporation

-Indian education act: gave parents more control over schools & school programs
-self- assistance act: programs for housing & education
